Nimisila Campground has had several improvements, and gained popularity, since the park district took over management in 2017 (previously managed by ODNR). Camping is particularly popular during the migration of the renowned purple martins. Although some campsites already feature electrical hookups, the system was aged and unreliable and the few sites with electric were in high demand. In 2023, the Foundation granted support to the Operations Department to enhance the campground’s infrastructure. The total number of campsites with electricity was increased from six to eighteen, and the bathrooms now have lighting. The C4 shelter was also upgraded with lighting and electric outlets.
In October 2023, contractors commenced work on the campsites, bathrooms, and C4 shelter. The project was completed in May 2024, and the campground opened for reservations starting on June 1, 2024.
